Hawthorn Hill

Project Methodology

Hawthorn Hill

Hawthorn Hill, Castalian Springs, Tennessee

This architectural assessment is the result of a project partnership between the Tennessee Historical Commission (THC) and the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area (TCWNHA).  The State of Tennessee owns Hawthorn Hill, a 19th century house located in Castalian Springs, Tennessee.  The THC asked the TCWNHA to develop this report for the house and its property.  After meetings between Martha Akins, State Sites Director, Patrick McIntyre, Executive Director, Dr. Carroll Van West, Director of the Center for Historic Preservation, and myself, work began on the report (see embedded report below).

I, with the assistance of Dr. West and Michael T. Gavin of the TCWNHA, assessed the preservation needs of the various structures located at the site.  Michael T. Gavin and myself measured the interior and exterior of the house.  I then worked to create detailed Auto CAD drawings and 3-D renderings (see video below), as well as develop and research the history of the family associated with the house.  I then, with the assistance of Michael T. Gavin, evaluated the building and site to develop a working needs assessment for the house and outbuildings.
